Anyone who is a Private Investigator in the state of Virginia is required by the
Code of Virginia to undergo an Virginia state and a National fingerprint check.
All private investigators in Virginia are also required to meet minimum training
requirements for initial registration and are required to receive in service
training approximately every two years. The Virginia Department of Criminal
Justice ensures that the public receives service from educated and trustworthy
people in the Private Security Industry in the Commonwealth of Virginia. To get

Regulations Relating to Private Security: 6 VAC 20-171.
All Private Security Companies as defined by the Code of VA (law firms
and CPAs performing security services are excluded) are also required to
retain a Compliance Agent (CA) who ensures that all Virginia Code
Requirements for Private Security Companies are being adhered to. The
Compliance Agent can be held personally responsible for lapses in any of the
requirements set by the Code of Virginia.
